    KITCHEN WORKTOPS

The type of worktop you choose for your new kitchen should depend on your lifestyle and family circumstances. For example, a material that will stain or scuff easily is not the right choice if you have young children at home. The art of getting the right worktops is in deciding which type will benefit you the most, be durable for your usage, and above all look great for years to come. Depending on your budget, the sky is the limit for design and practicality, ranging from intricate curves and unusual shapes to the most basic yet practical styling.

For those who enjoy cooking, a worktop that is heat resistant such as granite is perfect because you can place hot pans directly on the surface without worrying about burn marks.

All materials used for worktops have their advantages and disadvantages over others, so it’s important to take a look at the different factors involved.

The list below is aimed to provide you with useful information on some of the more popular choices of worktops available. This will give you a basic idea, but don’t hesitate to call us so one of our expert kitchen fitters can inform you more in-depth on the pros and cons of each material.

    Laminate Worktops

Laminate is a very popular choice for kitchen worktops and works well for food preparation, the sink and cooker areas, and kitchen usage in general.

We can supply laminate worktops which look like high-end materials such as solid wood, stone and granite; so a laminate worktop will fit in with any rustic or modern design you have in mind.

A laminate kitchen worktop will cost around £60 per square metre, and the low price reflects that laminate is not as durable as other worktop surfaces, and you should not cut directly onto the worktop or place hot pans on laminate.

    Solid Wood Worktops

Solid wood worktops are perfect for kitchen islands and food preparation areas. Teak is a popular choice of solid wood for around the sink as it is resistant to water.

Perhaps the best thing about a solid wood surface is the warm atmosphere it provides. It is also easy to repair, as scratches can be sanded down.

If you do not want to spend any time maintaining your worktop, solid wood is not ideal because it does require sealing with oil or lacquer.

If you have a young family a solid wood surface may not be the best option because spillages should be wiped immediately to prevent permanent staining.

The cost of the solid wood kitchen worktops depends on the wood you choose. Request a free quote today and we will advise you on the type of wood for your individual needs, plus supply you with pricing details for your desired type of wood.

    Natural Stone Worktops (Granite)

Granite worktops are very striking and can be used in all areas of the kitchen. There are many different types of finishes available, in just about every shade you can think of.

A granite worktop is perfect for those who want a low maintenance worktop. Although granite must be sealed on installing, a further sealing while being required for around 10 years. A damp cloth with a little mild detergent is all that is needed to keep your granite worktops in pristine condition.

Perhaps the best thing about granite it is high level of durability. It will withstand high temperatures and stains can be wiped away – however if you spill an acidic liquid on granite such as vinegar or lemon juice, it should be wiped immediately.

Granite is not the cheapest of kitchen worktop materials, and generally costs around £250 for a square metre. However, you are likely to get a good return on your investment if you should sell your home, and a kitchen with granite worktops is a desirable selling point.

    Man Made Granite Worktops (Quartz)

Quartz is man-made granite, and just like granite it is an extremely durable worktop surface. In fact it is more practical than granite, and less liable to chip or stain.

Quartz does not need sealing, and it is a material that offers a neater joints and edges than natural granite.

It is also easier on the pocket; a Quartz worktop costs around £250 – £300 per square metre.

    Earthstone Worktops

Earthstone worktops have a nonporous surface so staining or buildup of bacteria is never a problem. Earthstone is available in a choice of six colours and therefore will fit in well with any kitchen theme. While it is not recommended to place very hot pots on Earthstone, while minor burn marks can easily be rubbed away, as can scratches and small scuffs.

    Maia Worktops

Maia is a popular brand of kitchen worktops favoured by those who want a higher-end kitchen. Maia kitchen worktops look just like natural stone, but the price is far lower than you would pay for the real thing.
